Childhood Literacy

Key Metric

Proficiency Amongst Students By The End Of Grade 3
34.5%

One of the most powerful ways the church can positively impact the trajectory of a child’s life is ensuring they can read proficiently by the end of grade 3.

Access to quality early childhood education is foundational to a child’s development and has long-term effects on a child’s life trajectory. One critical milestone in development and predictor of future mobility is a child's ability to read proficiently by grade 3, when education switches from learning to read to reading to learn. Children who are not proficient readers by the end of the 3rd grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school. Columbus continues to have significant disparities in grade level reading proficiency rates across race, socioeconomic status.
